Community in Alabama: Architecture for Living Together

In 2007, the members of the American Institute of Architects are marking the AIA’s 150 years of service to the profession and the nation by working with their communities to create a better future by design.

Birmingham AIA has enthusiastically embraced AIA 150 and the Blueprint for America.  Birmingham AIA, the Alabama Council AIA and the Alabama Architectural Foundation have collaborated to promote several initiatives that will engage the community.  Some initiatives are celebratory and some are educational.

  • AIA Birmingham, Alabama Council AIA, and Alabama Architectural Foundation are working together to publish a book entitled "Creating Community".  The book embraces the Ten Principles of Livable Communities and involves local decision makers and public officials in discussing aspects of their community which are featured in the book.  "Creating Community" is the second book published by the Alabama Architectural Foundation.
  • A celebratory picnic will be held October 28, 2006 as the kick-off to launch AIA 150 among AIA Birmingham's members and families.
  • AIA Birmingham's initiative "dreamArchitecture" involves elementary school students and teachers, Grades K thru Five, and a Community Outreach Program designed to promote public awareness of Architecture.
  • Studio I is a monthly forum for high school students and local professionals designed to investigate the professional world of Architecture.  The theme for the 2007 Studio I will be a focus on AIA's Ten Principles of Livable Communities.
  • Alabama Council AIA has recently rolled out the AIA Disaster Response Task Force.  One of the services to be provided by AIA Architects to a community  which has been devastated by a natural event are charrettes regarding rebuilding their communities in which AIA Ten Principles of Livable Communities will be embraced.
  • AIA 150 Branding.  AIA 150 brand has been included on all publications, web sites and materials distributed by Birmingham AIA.  The publication and distribution of everything from tee shirts to bumper stickers to hard hat labels are designed to promote AIA 150 and the Blueprint for America to the public, professional affiliates as well as our members.

Come help us celebrate our 150 year anniversary!
