The contest was held in March in conjunction with National Youth Art Month and all school children in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade in the Greater Birmingham area and surrounding counties are invited to participate!

dreamArchitecture, May Chapter Meeting- Where Were You?
I wish I could get you guys to attend this event one time.  You would be hooked and volunteer to be on the dreamArchitecture committee.  It was our largest attendance in 13 years.  The theme this year was Draw Your Green “Dream School”. There were 46 future architects who won awards for their creative design/artwork of their dreamSchool.
The awards ceremony was held at Saw Works Studio/ArchitectureWorks.  The winner’s enjoyed their moment in the spotlight as Dick Pigford, AIA read each students description of their design and pointed out green features on the project. The following Saturday 10 3rd, 4th and 5th grade winners participated in a hand’s on workshop with Dick Pigford, AIA, Adrienne Retief, AIA and Emily Johnson, AIA. The children love the one on one with an architect in an architect’s office.
This program has grown and is receiving recognition in the educational system as an “inspiring educational program” that is much needed in the arts. We are concerned about the lack of funding for arts in the school systems. We are open to ideas, suggestions, volunteers on how AIA can assist schools that do not have an art curriculum.

This year’s theme, “Draw Your dream School” allows children to be both the client and the architect.  Originally started as a community outreach program to promote public awareness of architecture, our contest has grown from 100 entries in the first year to more than 2,000 last year! We look forward to your participation!

The Awards Ceremony was held May 7th, 2009, at ArchitectureWorks / SawWorks Studio. The top winners are viewabe here. For a list of all the winners, click here. First, Second, Third-Place and Honorable mention prizes were awarded to each age group from Kindergarten through Fifth Grade.
