The facility is the first U.S. manufacturer to build next to a landfill in order to use landfill gas as a fuel. The new factory will be one of the largest brick-making facilities in the country, and it will obtain 40 percent of its energy from landfill gas when it opens next year. Eventually it will run entirely on landfill gas, which is considered to be a renewable energy resource, as the plant expands over the years. www.jenkinsbrick.com/main/default.asp

Birmingham Chapter AIA Accolade Call for Entries 2007
Purpose: The Birmingham Chapter Accolade is intended to be the highest honor the Chapter can bestow on a chapter or associate member.  It is intended to be peer recognition of service to the Chapter and the profession of the highest order.  It is intended that this Accolade be awarded at any point in one’s career; rewarding a single significant contribution or a career body of work. While rewarding achievement, the award would be instrumental in assisting the outstanding Architect in receiving well deserved recognition and honors from others.

Presentation: The award would be presented annually at the Chapter’s Design Awards Gala on June 21st, 2007.

Nominations: Nominations shall be received only from chapter or associate members at the Birmingham Chapter office by 4:00pm on May 10, 2007.  Nomination shall substantiate eligibility of the candidate and contain sufficient detail as to support the nomination.  The minimum amount of information to be submitted would include the nominee’s name, contact information and short description of why, in the opinion of the nominator, the nominee should receive the honor.  All supporting information must be submitted in print format and be contained in an 8 ½ x11 binder. Nomination shall be for the current year only and shall not be automatically continued in subsequent years without formal re-nomination by an eligible Chapter member.  Executive member Committee members are allowed to nominate candidates.

Eligibility: Chapter members may not nominate themselves, previous recipients are not eligible and members of the Executive Committee are not eligible to become candidates while holding position on the Executive Committee. 

Election: Election shall be by the Chapter’s Executive Committee in secret written ballot.  Election shall be held after presentation of each of the candidate’s credentials by the Executive Director or Chapter Volunteer from an unbiased and neutral report prepared under the Executive Committee’s direction from information contained in the nomination and other sources.

AIA Birmingham Gives $13,000 to Charity! click here for bad photos
Each year AIA Birmingham holds a golf tournament to raise money for charities.  The 2006 tournament set new records in sponsor’s and players.  This enabled us to donate more money to our local charities.  The AIA golf Tournament presented Birmingham Architectural Foundation with a check for $3000, YW Homes $5000 and Pathways $5000.
