$$$ Incentives for Architects

Who do we thank first?  I need to thank AIA members for attending two luncheons at the Summit Club in one month (pricier than our usual meetings – we do appreciate the support). Thanks to Engineered Tax Services for stepping in with a 4 day notice and for sponsoring a portion of the lunch.  Michael D’Onofrio did a great job with the presentation.  It was nice to see so many architects so engaged in the presentation, but he was talking about money for YOU!  ETS was kind enough to provide the power point presentation for the newsletter for those of you who missed the meeting.  Click here for the presentation. ETS is currently working with several local firms. Architects call now before some of your projects expire. Utilize the tax incentive as a business development opportunity. Review your past projects and see if there is an opportunity for an owner to take advantage of the incentive. Contact Mike D’Onofrio for more info mdonofrio@engineeredtaxservices.com.

BAF Scholarships

B.A.F. Furthering the Profession

This year the Birmingham Architectural Foundation awarded three $1,500 scholarships to students attending accredited schools of architecture. Fairfield High graduate, Whitney Johnson and Parker High graduate, Otto Clark are both attending Auburn University.  Johnson could not attend the luncheon; she is attending summer school at Auburn.   Antonio Minifield, a Ramsay High graduate is in his sophomore year at Tuskegee University.  This is Minifield’s second year to be awarded a scholarship from the Foundation.  A smiling Minifield was quick in his acceptance speech to let the architects in the audience know, “If any of you have intern positions in your firms, I am more than happy to fill the position for you.  I am available after the meeting to discuss.”  Due to the economy in the built environment, Minifield was unable to obtain an intern position, but has managed to earn money by selling some of his artwork to friends and family.  Please keep these three students in mind if you need interns in the future.
Thank you to everyone who supported the AIA 2009 Annual Golf Tournament.  We understand the economy is rough, but our charitable organizations need us even more this year.  Save the date for the 2010 Annual Golf Tournament - OCTOBER 7TH, 2010.  Robert Trent Jones-Valley and Ridge.

Also, a big Thank You goes to AIA National and it's Component Matching Grant Program for awarding us a $1200 matching grant for scholarships!

AIA Birmingham Golf Tournament Still Giving!
The 2009 AIA Birmingham annual golf tournament still raised enough money to give $6000 to Pathways and $6000 to the Birmingham Architectural Foundation.

Emerging Professionals

Architects + Kickball + Adult Beverages = GREAT Times!
The AIA kickball team, Hire an Architect, had a great season. A lot of kickballs were kicked, bases were ran, and beer and margaritas were drank. This was a tough bunch of architects; they kept on playing through heat, rain, and injuries. Although scoring was not the team’s strong point, the outfield played like pros! Click here for more photos. AIA is VERY proud of Hire an Architect. To honor this group of professional architects and kickballers, we are holding an end-of season party and awards ceremony. Everyone is invited to attend and see the players receive their awards.
