Happy Holidays AIA Members!
We made it through another year together, good times! I hope all of you will be able to renew your AIA Membership for 2009. I realize the economy is not the best and sometimes you question the value of your AIA membership. Danya put together a great $ value chart below for you to read.
I experienced a different AIA membership value in November. My Dad was chosen to be an ANGEL on November 19th, 20008. His services were held 30 miles outside of Birmingham and so many of you took the time out of your Saturday to attend his memorial. I received emails, cards, a beautiful painting and our church has received numerous generous donations on his behalf. My family (and me too) was so touched by AIA’s kindness and generosity. AIA Birmingham is one family.
Thank you for making a difficult time a little easier.
Friends are family you chose for yourself. – Jane Adams in New York Times

Peace,
Rhea Williams
Executive Director
P.S. If your firm is suffering from the economic crisis, email National AIA to arrange for economic hardship waiver for your AIA dues or other arrangements. I don’t want to lose a single member, but I do understand.

Many of you may also be wondering if there is really any value in retaining your AIA membership. Are there any? Of course! What kind of organization would we be if we did not offer you something in return for your support?! The charts below show you how your AIA Membership pays for itself in the long run.

Intern Study Sessions On AGAIN
Bill Segrest has been kind enough to arrange another ARE study session.
Stewart Lee, Structural Design Group will discuss General Structures Dec. 2nd and 3rd and Lateral Forces on December 9th. 5:30 to roughly 7:30 each day. It is important for you to come with a touch of prior glances of the structural material to ask informed questions about particular stumbling blocks. While we are focused on ARE 3.1, the material has not changed, and will be applicable to ARE 4.0 for those interested. Please RSVP by Tuesday a.m.
WHERE: HKW – 2 North 20th Street, Suite 100
DATE: December 2nd & 3rd
Topic – General Structures – Part I and Part II
DATE: December 9th
Topic – Lateral Forces
TIME: 5:30 – 7:30
Six-Month Rule Begins 1 July 2009 for SOME Interns
Washington, DC—In June, the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards’ (NCARB) Member Boards passed a rule requiring interns to submit their training units in reporting periods of no longer than six months. The Six-Month Rule, as it has been nicknamed, will go into effect on 1 July 2009 for interns who begin an NCARB
Record on or after that date and 1 July 2010 for all interns regardless of application date. All training unit reports must be submitted electronically and within two months of completion of each reporting period.

2008 NCARB Architect Survey – Pretty Interesting….
Washington, DC—The 2008 survey of state architectural registration boards by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) indicates that there are currently 104,126 registered architects in the United States. The 2008 survey also reveals that there are 116,221 reciprocal (out-of state) architects and 220,347 total registrations. Thismeans, on average, an architect is registered in at least two different jurisdictions. California has the highest number of resident architects (16,979) and the highest number of total registrations (21,734). NCARB collects data for the survey from its 54 Member Boards, which includes all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. NCARB makes this information available annually as a service to the profession. Survey data are listed below. For more information about the 2008 Survey of Registered Architects, contact NCARB at 202-783-6500. click here for the full story.
Architects Leading the Sustainable Evolution – Sustainable Design Credits Now Mandatory
Sir Winston Churchill once said, “We shape our buildings, and afterwards our buildings shape us.” At no other time have these words been more poignant than they are today. Our environment is a precious resource, and we, as designers of projects that have an impact on the environment, share a responsibility for maintaining an awareness of, and proficiency in, the ever-expanding field of sustainable design. In response to these new demands the AIA Board voted to modify the AIA’s annual education requirements to include a minimum four hours of education in sustainable design (SD). Beginning in January 2009, four of your required 18 annual learning units must focus on sustainable design. Learning units that qualify for sustainable design will also apply to the annual health, safety, and welfare (HSW) requirement.
All qualifying courses in sustainable design offered by AIA Continuing Education System (CES) Registered Providers will be identified as such, as are those courses and programs that carry HSW learning units. The AIA/CES team is working with our providers to offer members more education opportunities to fulfill this new requirement—including education opportunities that qualify for sustainable design learning units during the AIA National Convention.
You may also report programs offered by non-AIA/CES-registered providers that meet the sustainable design qualifying criteria through the Structured Self-Report Program. Remember, however, that self-designed educational activities do not qualify for either SD or HSW learning units.
Program content qualifies for sustainable design learning units based on the AIA Committe On The Enviroment (COTE) Top Ten Measures of Sustainable Design and the AIA Sustainability Discussion Group’s (SDiG) 50to50 carbon reduction strategies.
For more detailed information about qualifying criteria, click on the AIA COTE Top Ten Measures of Sustainable Design below:
- Sustainable Design Intent and Innovation
- Regional /Community Design and Connectivity
- Land Use and Site Ecology
- Bioclimatic Design
- Light and Air
- Water Cycle
- Energy Flows and Energy Futures
- Materials and Construction
- Long Life/Loose Fit
- Collective Wisdom and Feedback Loops
If you have questions regarding the new sustainable design education requirements, please contact AIA Continuing Education at SDCE@aia.org.

2008 AIA Birmingham Design Awards, Honor Awards
2009 Design Award Entries Exhibited at Green Expo
All 2009 design award entries will be exhibited during the Green Expo, May 12 – 14th at the Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center. This is another great marketing opportunity for your firm. There will be attendees from all over the South; Florida, Georgia, Tennessee and Mississippi.
We want to give everyone a “heads up” on the dates for 2009 AIA Birmingham Design Awards. The jury will be held in San Francisco in conjunction with the National AIA Convention. This is the only way we could ever hold a jury in San Francisco due to the cost. The convention is earlier this year which makes Design Awards entries due earlier.
We wanted everyone to be aware ASAP of the earlier dates.
January Call for Entries
March 2nd Entry Forms due
April 8th Submittals due
April 28th Jury
We hope to be accepting credit cards by January 2009 for design award entries,
design award tickets and chapter meetings!
 DOCUMENTS
AIA Document E202-2008 BIM Exhibit
In October 2008, AIA released six new contract documents, one being the E202-2008 BIM Exhibit. This document was developed to ease the use of BIM for design firms by clearly specifying and assigning responsibilities to the various project parties. E202-2008 directly answers the questions:
- Who is responsible for each element of the model and to what level of development?
- What are authorized uses for the model?
- To what extent can users rely on the model?
- Who will manage the model?
- Who owns the model?
To receive your FREE sample of E202-2008 and to get more information on ALL AIA documents, visit www.aiacontractdocuments.org.
