AIA Birmingham: Newsletter masthead

Happy New Year AIA Members!

Change, resolutions, New Year, new president, new problems, new views…2009 is bringing in a new year.  A year that we are going to have to do things differently to make ends meet.  We get in a routine and that routine works great for a while, but then things around us change (economy, environment, politics, people, media, clients,) and we have to change too.   Be open to doing things differently, trying new techniques, a fresh approach to business, think outside the box, try attending AIA meetings, networking with other organizations, attend AIA meetings (did I list that already?) and be open minded to others.
Expect change with AIA Birmingham in 2009.  We have some new ideas we are excited about for 2009 and we hope you will all be open to the change.  I look forward to a new year with all of you.  Let’s have some fun in 2009!

Peace,
Rhea Williams
Executive Director

The Smorgasbord by Danya Humaideh
Rhea giving all a big welcomeWelcome to 2009!  I hope you all ate your black eyed peas and collard greens to bring on some good fortune.  2008 was a rough year for a lot of people but it is important to stay positive in 2009.  As Rhea explained to me, negative thoughts only make bad situations worse.  I understand it is very difficult to stay positive, especially when things are not looking so bright; however, open your eyes and see the true fortunes in your lives.  It will give you a gratifying outlook on life.  Below are some hopeful words to keep in mind from some of the world’s optimists. Happy New Year!

"Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm." ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Don't spend your precious time asking "Why isn't the world a better place?" It will only be time wasted. The question to ask is "How can I make it better?" To that there is an answer." ~ Leo Buscaglia

"If your ship doesn't come in, swim out to it." ~ Jonathan Winters

"What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us." ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

"When one door closes another door opens; but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us." ~ Alexander Graham Bell

"A bend in the road is not the end of the road... unless you fail to make the turn. " ~ Unknown

"I have heard there are troubles of more than one kind.
Some come from ahead and some come from behind.
But I've bought a big bat. I'm all ready you see.
Now my troubles are going to have troubles with me!" ~ Dr. Seuss

GOOD TIMES!  AIA Birmingham Holiday Party
Rumor has it, the AIA Birmingham Holiday Party was the best party that night (and we had some competition).  We held the party at Bare Hands Art Gallery and we were the preview party for the 2009 Bare Hands Shine Opening.  Wendy Jarvis, Executive Director of Bare Hands and volunteers did a beautiful job having the gallery “party ready”. George Sarris, The Fish Market prepared a YUMMY feast as always for us.  Our menu for the evening; herb stuffed pork loin, roasted vegetables, olives medley with french bread, orzo with shrimp and scallop salad, rosemary potatoes, egg plant dip  and mixed desserts.  And we cannot have a party without our favorite bar tender Rashid!
Thanks to everyone who made it to the party and thanx for another great AIA BIRMINGHAM YEAR!!!

Thank You G & L Marble

Thank you for hosting our December meeting.  G & L Marble provided a delicious lunch and an HSW credit.  We love visiting the G & L Showroom and warehouse.  They have a beautiful selection of marble/natural stones.  www.glmarble.com

Oh The Places We've Been... Visited From

17 countries, including Sweden, Great Britian, Ireland, Germany, France and Canada; 33 U.S. states and we’ve had over 2,600 hits on the website during the month of December (and that’s a slow month due to the holidays!). We've also had almost 1900 unique views. The top most popular keywords for finding AIA Birmingham on the web were aia Birmingham, birmingham aia, (kps)architects, birmingham architects, rhea williams Alabama, aia birmingham, al, aia bham, architects birmingham al, aia birmingham al and aiabham.org.

The most popular pages on our website are the monthly newsletter page, the home page, the newsletter archive page, careers page, the “find an architect” page, contacts, sponsorships, the 2008 design awards page (remember this when you start thinking about Design Awards 2009!) and the excom page.

2009 Design Award Entries
We should not have to list all the reasons to enter AIA BIRMINGHAM DESIGN AWARDS again …, but we will: RECOGNITION, FREE PRESS, MEDIA, SHOW OFF YOUR WORK, SHOW OFF BIRMINGHAM ARCHITECTS WORK, GET OUR NAME OUT THERE, START MAKING A NAME FOR BIRMINGHAM WORK (outside of Birmingham), AIA Birmingham’s Special Edition Design Awards Newsletter (more hits on the 2008 Special Edition).  So what if you know/think your project will not win an award, because your work is more traditional – all entries are printed in the Birmingham Business Journal, all entries are posted on the AIA website – ($150 to enter is less expensive than an advertisement in any publication) and Design Award entries are a resource for all media to go to see a firms work.  Think about it….
All 2009 design award entries will be exhibited during the Green Expo, May 12 – 14th at the Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center.  This is another great marketing opportunity for your firm.  There will be attendees from all over the South; Florida, Georgia, Tennessee and Mississippi.

Save these dates for 2009 AIA Birmingham Design Awards.  The jury will be held in San Francisco in conjunction with the National AIA Convention.  This is the only way we could ever hold a jury in San Francisco due to the cost.  The convention is earlier this year which makes Design Awards entries due earlier. Download the 2009 Design Awards Call For Entries here.
We wanted everyone to be aware ASAP of the earlier dates.
January             Call for Entries
March 2nd         Entry Forms due.
April 8th            Submittals due
April 28th          Jury

We hope to be accepting credit cards by January 2009 for design award entries, design award tickets and chapter meetings!
