Design Awards Makes Another Big Splash--This Time on our Website
Look at the number of people who hit the AIA 2008 Design Awards Special Edition newsletter. On June 3, (the day AIA sent out the regular newsletter) we had 358 visits and 19619 hits. That's pretty typical for the monthly newsletter. On June 10th, we had 435 visits and 53,642 hits--more people looked and they looked at lots more pages. On an average day our website gets between 150 and 200 visits. On June 11th we had 252 visits. A little better than average on visits.  But, we had over 10,000 hits (the people who came looked at many pages) and the average hits is something around 2500. And this trend continued for the next two days.

1,400 megs of info were transferred on Tuesday, June 10th. Our typical daily average is around 33 megs of data, so you guys and a lot of others were looking at lots of design award entries. And you looked at multiple pictures of each award.

All the more reason to enter the 2009 AIA Birmingham Design Awards! If you would like your 2008 Design Award Project boards, please come by the AIA office.

Reusable Grocery Bag, AIA

July 15th Chapter Meeting 1.5 HSW
FREE AIA Birmingham Walk the Walk reusable bags
We launched our “Walk the Walk” campaign at the Design Awards Gala and handed out the AIA Birmingham Chapter reusable bags.  We will give these out at this chapter meeting.  Help us walk the walk!  Think green.  Think glocally.  Be a locavore!

Topic - “Duties and Liabilities During the Construction Phase.”  We will address the design professional’s responsibilities during the construction phase and discuss the components of successful contract administration and important contractual considerations.  We will also review numerous claims scenarios encountered during the construction phase, including several claims involving jobsite safety issues with a focus on contractual safety duties, assumption of non-contractual duties, and the intent and application of OSHA.

Speaker bio: Colleen Palmer joined Beazley in December 2007 as an A&E Risk Manager. Before joining Beazley, Colleen was a practicing attorney at Donovan Hatem LLP, in Boston, MA, where she focused her practice on assisting architects and engineers. She specialized in providing risk management services to design professionals on a nationwide basis, including conducting risk management seminars and providing contract reviews. Colleen earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Cornell University and her Juris Doctor, cum laude, from the University of Miami, School of Law.

Let’s Try Something NEW!
We are always looking for new projects and programs.  Our newest idea is to promote artist (preferably those in the architecture profession) who do not show in galleries, but have amazing talent.  July will be our first month to try this and we will see what happens.  The opening will be July 24th from 4:30 – 6:00 and HOAR Construction will sponsor the beer and wine.  Our first artist we are showcasing is Van Roberson. Van Roberson is an artist and consultant living and working in Birmingham, AL and a graduate of Auburn University School of Architecture (Environmental Design).  Van's artwork has ranged from assemblage sculpture to functional art to painting.  His current efforts include Above Finished Floor, a collection of over 40 mixed media paintings interpreting urban centers as seen from varying altitudes. For more information on Van, please visit his website, www.MagicCity.Etsy.com.

To help us better plan for this, rsvp is appreciated, but not necessary.  It will help us plan for the beer and wine
GreencupBookstore and Bare Hands Art Gallery will also be open and have agreed to play with us that afternoon.  Make plans to enjoy a special 1st Ave. South party.

Smorgasbord

In a world that relies so heavily on various types of plastics, it is important to know which types are recyclable and which ones are not.  For example, the plastic that holds soda cans together – why are they not recyclable?  A website, called Your Guide to Green (www.yourguidetogreen.com), supplied some very interesting information about “greening” your life. It was also able to answer the question of recyclable plastics in an article titled, “The Low Down on Plastic Numbers.” Please use this guide to properly purchase and/or recycle your plastics.

#1: PET: (polyethylene terephthalate): RECYCLABLE - includes soda and water bottles, plastic egg cartons and microwave trays:
              high recycled value
can be used to make fibers for carpet, or materials for fleece jackets, t-shirts, and reusable shopping bags
#2: HDPE: (high-density polyethylene): RECYCLABLE – includes shampoo bottles, laundry detergent bottles, milk jugs and water jugs
can be used to make alternative decking materials, such as Trex
can also be used to make Tyvek material and HAZMAT suits (these items are not recyclable)
#3: V: (vinyl or polyvinyl chloride): SOMETIMES RECYCLABLE – includes clear food packaging, outdoor furniture and some plumbing pipe
#4: LDPE: (Low-density polyethylene): RECYCLABLE – includes bread bags, frozen food bags, grocery bags and the plastic that holds soda cans together
many recycling facilities will not accept these kinds of plastics because of the high transportation costs associated
              with recycling them
FYI – The downtown recycling center does not accept the plastic soda holders but please cut them up before
               throwing them away
#5: PP: (polypropylene): NOT RECYCLABLE – includes yogurt and margarine containers
not enough products that can be made from this plastic to outweigh the costs of recycling it
#6: PS: (polystyrene): SOMETIMES RECYCLABLE – used to make disposable dishes, to-go containers, Styrofoam packaging peanuts, meat trays and coffee cups
the best thing to do with this type of plastic is to not use it at all or to use it as little as possible
#7: Others: NOT RECYCLABLE – this includes things such as ketchup bottles and lids
these products are made from plastic resins, which make them non-recyclable

Click here to read the whole article. Remember to check your plastics before throwing them away or recycling them and PLEASE RECYLCE RESPONSIBLY!

BARE HANDS GALLERY

BARE HANDS GALLERY was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit arts organization in May 2004.  Prior to that (June 1996 – April 2004) it was a local gallery committed to providing a positive and professional venue for local contemporary visual artists who were seldom shown in retail galleries due to their emerging status and non-traditional approach to art making.  Jessica Helfrecht founded the gallery, infused it with a strong sense of community and curated many memorable and inspiring exhibits.  In December 2000 she sold Bare Hands to long-time gallery patron Wendy Jarvis.  Jarvis owned the gallery until April 2004 when she and gallery artists began its conversion to a not-for-profit in order to keep the gallery true to its original purpose and to work to expand its mission.  To date Jarvis serves as the director of Bare Hands Gallery and is supported by an extraordinary staff of volunteers.

Annually Bare Hands hosts nine art exhibitions, an average of seven performing arts events, and the multi-cultural community celebration, the Day of the Dead Festival on November 2nd.  In addition it is available for a variety of private events and offers yoga classes on Monday nights.

Come by the gallery on July 24th to see two pieces with lots of architectural interest – Go Organico by Tracy Martin and The Heaviest Corner on Earth by (architects) Kathleen Rose-Byington & John Morse.  Both works were created for the gallery’s Garden Party with a City View event at Jones Valley Urban Farm.

AIA Birmingham has a New Neighbor
GreencupBooks is a not-for-profit community bookstore and publisher. Browse thousands of used books as well as new books. Check out their architecture and homes section for some unique selections including The Architectural Heritage of Newport Rhode Island 1640-1915, Pre-Columbian Architecture, Sticks & Stones. A Study of American Architecture and Civilization, The Works: Anatomy of a City, and many others. Of course, they have fine editions of classics, a great selection of poetry, biographies, art books, older non-fiction, fiction, a nice group of Penguin paperback classics, and oddities and ephemera to browse.

As a community bookstore, GreencupBooks offers its space free of charge to interested groups such as the Birmingham Art Collective and hosts free lecture/discussion series (their Marxist Feminist series was a hit; they are looking to book a series on anarchism; and are open to suggestions, especially if you would like to volunteer to lead!). Open mike nights are held twice per month interspersed among other events such as the recent Peter Wilm exhibit, the Birmingham Art Collective's first salon, and specialty nights at the bookstore such as the upcoming Heavy Metal Bookstore on July 7 (7-10 p.m.). Look for progressive theatre at GreencupBooks as well in the coming months.

One of the more interesting facets of the bookstore is that it is a leaderless organization. Operated by volunteers, there is no hierarchy, only history. The space belongs to the community and runs entirely on general principles of kindness, fairness, and hard work. Book donations are key to the survival of the space. In general, the used bookstore is somewhat endangered and it takes a lot of creative collaboration to keep the doors open.

As a community publisher, GreencupBooks enables anyone with a manuscript to see their book in print. Professionally designed, edited, typeset, and printed, books, journals, and magazines produced by GreencupBooks combine excellence with economy. Free quotes are available on request at the space or by calling Russell at 205-994-0960.

If you want to be a part of the GreencupBooks community, just drop in or check out their web site at www.greencupbooks.org.

Understanding Engineers
Normal people believe that if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Engineers believe that if it ain't broke, it doesn't have enough features yet.
Engineers, you know we love you.

BJCC Qualifications
"In support of the its expansion efforts, the BJCC is in the process of taking statement of qualifications from architectural firms with at least ten years experience in designing long span, large assembly multi-purpose facilities. It is anticipated that this process will be completed by mid-to-late September 2008. The Design Architect will not be selected until the site assessment activity currently being facilitated by the Birmingham Business Leadership Group is completed in early September 2008. Upon selection of the Design Architect, the BJCC will thenembark upon a seperate, but similar, process to identify local architectural interest. It is the intent of the BJCC to fully engage the local architectural community to assist in its expansion efforts."

Others may talk, but architects walk the walk on sustainable design.
