ALBERT KAHN EXHIBIT – July Chapter Meeting – Summit Club
We are happy to announce an exhibit at LITE BOX Gallery in Pepper Place of Albert Kahn’s work July 20 – 26th.  The July Chapter Meeting at the Summit Club will kick off the opening of the exhibit and then there will be a reception at LITE BOX Gallery later in the week.  This is an event we hope will raise public awareness of architects.
Albert Kahn faced innumerable obstacles in pursuit of his ambition to be an architect.  His family could only afford to provide him a formal education until the age of 11 and he needed to work to help support the large family. He was fortunate to find two mentors --Julius Melcher, a sculptor and artist, who taught him drawing skills and George Mason, an architect in Detroit, who taught him design and gave him the opportunity to quench thirst for knowledge in the office library.
-            1890 - Awarded traveling scholarship to Europe by American Architect
-            1895 - Founded his own architectural firm
-            1900 - First industrial work:  Boyer Machine Company
-            1901 - First experimented with reinforced concrete in design of Palms Apartment House
-            1902 - Joins American Institute of Architects
-            1903 - Designed first industrial plants for Packard Motor Car Company:  Plants 1 through 9
-            1905 - Designed first saw-tooth roof to provide day lighting at the Burroughs Adding Machine Plant
-            1905 - Designed first industrial plant utilizing reinforced concrete at Packard Motor Car Company Plant Number 10
-            1907 - Designed first building without brick wall panels using steel and glass sash at Mergenthaler Linotype Plant

2009 AIA Birmingham Design Awards
Have you seen all the press for AIA Birmingham Design Awards?  The Birmingham Business Journal published ALL ENTRIES, Birmingham Home & Garden will publish the residential entries and Business Alabama will publish the winners. The AIA Birmingham Special Edition Newsletter went out June 17th and had 2326 page views.  You might see a television commercial on Fox 6 news soon about AIA and Design Awards…!
We promised you jury comments regarding the winning projects.  Here they are:

Commercial award:
HKW Associates – Stewart Perry Corporate Headquarters
Merit Award
The jury appreciated this project's calm sense of place, a sort of rooted comfort: buildings that are traditional in form without being finicky, settled into the site and smart in their openness to the reclaimed environment -- a philosophy also reflected in the project's LEED Silver rating.

Renovation and adaptive reuse:
GA Studio – Greek Orthodox Church: Plaza
MERIT Award
RA002: What's striking is the success with which an entrance of an older church was reconceptualized to become a nook within the larger city. Enticing without being pompous, the redesigned plaza uses the landscape to signal the church is not a place apart, but part of daily life.

RA005: bDot Architecture – Studio 212
MERIT Award
Preservation as it should be -- a conversion of a brick structure into a studio and performance space where the new is defined by the old. The inserted metal forms, though modern, defer to the aged shell. As for the distinctive cut of the windows, they show passersby history has not stopped.

Residential
Adams Design Associates - Infill Houses at Fountain Heights Neighborhood
HONOR Award
006: Urbanistically, this is a great approach to community renewal, creating homes for 25 families while strengthening the fiber of an older neighborhood. What lifts it to award status is the stripped-down dignity of the homes -- architecture that relies on order rather than fuss to seem timeless.

Institutional
Krumdieck A+I Design - Sunshine Farms Chapel
MERIT Award
1031: This is architecture as sculpture, with stone-clad walls and flooring that seem to emerge from the earth, while the open wooden frame of the chapel connects to the surrounding forest and, yes, the heavens above. Strong and confident, as lasting architecture should be.

Cohen Carnaggio & Reynolds - McKenzie Court Community Center
MERIT Award
IO24: This shows the region that contemporary architecture can be colorful and fun: the shapes are energetic and the use of zinc is a refreshing contrast to the strong horizontal masonry. Other pluses are the smart layout, and the way the cistern doubles as a tower element.

Krumdieck A+I Design- Our Savior Lutheran Church
MERIT Award
1030: There's nothing unusual in the design, but that's not the point. What's impressive is the dignity and massing of the materials, with the one bit of expressive craftsmanship reserved for where it will leave the strongest mark: the gaunt but industrious trusswork in the nave.

HKW Associates-  Hilltop Montessori School
MERIT Award
1034: What stood out here isn't the architecture as much as the sensibility, tying the complex into the environment with everything from the siting of the buildings to the generous clerestories, the permeable paving and, yes, the cheerful red birdhouse at the peak of the roof.

By now, many of you are LEED certified or have taken interest in expanding your sustainable knowledge past LEED. However, the industry is constantly changing, with new technology and new methods of developing sustainable buildings for people and nature to thrive together. In an effort to meet the future demand of green initiatives, Green Building Focus has collected a range of speakers from various backgrounds to deliver an extensive 2-day educational experience. “Live Simply so Others Can Simply Live,” “The Green Building Underwriting Standard,” Beyond the Cutting Edge of Green Building,” and “Green Prototypes in a Large Scale Landscape & the Impact of the Stimulus Package” are just a few of the topics being presented during the expo. G.R.E.E.N ACT - Effects YOU!
Earlier this year, Congressman Ed Perlmutter (Colorado) introduced “The Green Resources for Energy Efficient Neighborhoods Act of 2009” (HR 2336) into the House of Representatives.  The bill, known as “The GREEN Act of 2009” will encourage the development and implementation of energy efficient building technologies, the use of more durable materials, and the development of renewable energy sources.  This bill’s incentives include loans, grants, mortgage guarantees, and other incentives for private homeowners, real estate developers, non-profit organizations, and other entities.  The bill has been referred to the House Financial Services Committee, of which Congressman Spencer Bachus is the ranking Republican member.  Hearings on the bill began the week of June 15th.  The bill can be found at:
http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/getdoc.cgi?dbname=111_cong_bills&docid=f:h2454eh.txt.pdf

This bill could affect the goals that our clients have in their real estate developments or capital improvements, and may open up opportunities for enhanced energy efficiency.  AIA Birmingham encourages each of its members to review the bill and to contact your congressman with your comments.  If you are interested in more information regarding this ACT, please email aiabirm@aiabham.org.
