Happy Hot July!
I need to apologize to all of you for letting the economy get the best of my attitude. Most of you are experiencing the same funkiness; hard to stay positive, no desire to be cheery, drained from trying to be upbeat and just plain old beaten down by life. When we have that kind of attitude, not many people want to hang out with us (or do business with us).
Sometimes we need to take a minute and recognize at least one positive in our lives. Do this each day and by the end of the week, you may even smile.
I am reading the book The Noticer (recommended by a local magazine) and it is all about perspective. Are you eating ramen noodles or do you see it as pasta? It will make you think about what you do have in life. I will finish the book this weekend and if you would like to borrow it shoot me an email and you can pick it up at the AIA office.
Remember to smile, have fun and keep a positive attitude. Everyone around you will appreciate it!
Peace and Smiles

Design Awards Luncheon??? 10, 000 People…WHAT?!
Yes, we have added to design awards again! AIA Birmingham will hold its first (that I know of) design awards luncheon. It will be at the Summit Club, July 8th, 2010 from 11:15 to 1:00. The project boards are on display in the Regions Harbert, Jennifer Harwell retail space by the elevators. They will be on display until July 9th, 2010. 40,000 people walk through the Regions Harbert Lobby in one month, an average of 10,000 people in one week. Your project boards look amazing and so many people stopped while we were setting up!
We will still hold the AIA Birmingham Design Awards presentation at the Green Building Focus Conference, August 25th in the KPS pavilion from 6:00 – 7:00 (free). The project boards will be on exhibit along the “wall of fame” as you enter the BJCC. Conference attendees will vote for the People’s Choice Award August 25th. Karan Grover will announce the People’s Choice award following the AIA Birmingham Design Awards presentation.
We realize these are big changes for Design Awards. We are trying something new and will review the changes and tweak the changes in 2011. Be patient, please.
Birmingham Business Journal will publish their AIA Design Awards special session July 9th. Birmingham Home & Garden and Business Alabama have an AIA Design Awards ad in this month’s issue.

$4500 Awarded in Scholarships!
Thanks to a 2009 successful AIA golf tournament, the Birmingham Architectural Foundation was able to award three $1500 scholarships to Antonio Minifield (Tuskegee), Otto Clark (Auburn University) and Whitney Johnson (Auburn University). This is the foundation’s 4th year to award scholarships totaling $15,500 since 2006. A portion of this money was provided by matching scholarship grants from National AIA. The recipients will be awarded and recognized at the July chapter meeting July 20th at the Summit Club. Please make an effort to attend and show your support.

Kris Shields is our local LaFarge North America representative 901.359.6178.

Join us for a screening of Citizen Architect: Samuel Mockbee and the Spirit of the Rural Studio, followed by an informal panel discussion with local architects Richard Pigford, Bruce Lanier, David Austin, Richard Hudgens, and Danny Wicke, Rural Studio Outreach Instructor. Oscar’s, our new café, will be open for drinks and light supper during the program. Citizen Architect: Samuel Mockbee and the Spirit of the Rural Studio is a documentary film on the late architect Samuel Mockbee and the radical educational design program known as the Rural Studio. Located in Hale County, Alabama, home to some of the most impoverished communities in the nation, Auburn University’s Rural Studio is one of the most prolific and inspirational design-build outreach programs ever established. Citizen Architect chronicles the life of its founder, the late Samuel Mockbee, artist, architect and educator. A full description can be found on the film's website, http://citizenarchitectfilm.com
The film is FREE, but reservations are suggested as seating is limited. Click here for the full poster.
