“We’re always searching for worthwhile activities for a kid who’s not particularly interested in sports, and this was one of the best things we’ve come across.  Everything during the evening’s festivities struck just the right tone of kid-friendliness and solemnity, and even the food was fun.  Our son is now talking about pursuing a career in architecture, and while he’s got a little more time before he needs to settle that issue, we appreciate that fact that he’s thinking about new and worthwhile and creative things”.
Email from a parent after the dreamArchitecture awards ceremony.

The 2008 dreamArchitecture was another huge success.  Despite the tornado warnings and some schools being held until 5:00 p.m., we had another record crowd.  Over 100 parents, teachers, students, ARCHITECTS and principals attended the awards ceremony held at SawWorks Studio May 8th, 2008.

Each year the awards ceremony exceeds our expectations. This is truly a night for the students to shine and show off their architectural talent.  Many parents attending have no idea what to expect and are so impressed with the ceremony. Many are surprised at their children’s hidden gift.  The winning students were awarded with mahogany art boxes, sketch pads, water colors, blik blocks and other art/architectural supplies to encourage their creativity and sketching at an early age.  The students love being the center of attention for the evening.

read about all the winners and their ideas!

We are working with the Birmingham Museum of Art to work out a schedule to display the artwork at the museum.  We will keep you informed where and when the art will be displayed.

The jury was held April 16th, 2008 at SawWorks Studio. The jury was;
Karim Shamsi-Basha, Brantley Frye, Allison Harsh, Paul Kennedy, Trevor Matchett and John Wilson.  Photos of jury
The dreamArchitecture committee is Susan Lineberry, Dick Pigford, Adrienne Retief and Robert Stockton.  Great job!
We would also like to thank our sponsor firms; ArchitectureWorks, Cohen Carnaggio & Reynolds, Davis Architects Inc., Giattina Aycock Studio, HKW Associates,
Hendon + Huckestein Architects PC, KPS Group and Paul Krebs AE.

“Art is like a door that you can walk through and be someone else for a change! And sense we are having problems with global warming I have made a door into a world that really shows people what it would be like if everyone just recicaled some cans once and a while. Or didn’t carelessly leave the lamp on for no reason. A nice POLUTION FREE world. I hope you enjoy it!!”

AIA Contract Documents
Since 1888, AIA has been an industry leader in contract agreements—and a new era has now arrived with Integrated Project Delivery (IPD). IPD allows you to maximize efficiency during the building process while drawing on the strengths of your design and construction team members.
With AIA's new IPD Agreements, you can choose the one that will:

Govern your project
Clarify key relationships
lay out a road map to organize the project
develop a balanced risk/reward system
clarify goals

These models support transparency and full collaboration, building upon the expertise of your project team.
Welcome to the new standard—AIA IPD Agreements...
The new AIA IDP Agreements are available in paper form at the AIA Birmingham office or you can purchase AIA Contract Document software by going to www.aia.org/docs.
For more information, please visit www.aiacontractdocuments.com and download the free IDP Guide

P.S. Look for the AIA Birmingham documents advertisement in the July Southeast Construction magazine.  AIA Birmingham was the first to respond to an email National AIA sent out to all full service document distributors for a free advertisement.

Scratchin’ at SLOSS
If you missed the May Sloss Furnaces – YOU MISSED A GOOD TIME.
Several members (above) did scratch blocks and had so much fun.  You guys are really good!  Paige Wainwright gave us the short version of the tour and everyone met the Sloss metal artist.  The metal artists are designing the centerpieces for AIA 2008 Design Awards.
Sloss artist are happy to commission pieces.

Interns Getting a Break from the Office at Brad Morton’s Studio
Interns got to have free pizza at Brad Morton’s beautiful courtyard.  Brad also gave us a tour of his studio and explained the casting process for his pieces.  He is currently working on the sculptures for St. Vincent’s Hospital.
Thank you Brad for hosting our May intern site visit.
If you have a great project or something of interest for the interns, please email your ideas to aiabirm@aiabham.org.  We are always looking!
