AIA Birmingham: Newsletter masthead

Hello AIA Members!

I wrote an editorial letter to the Birmingham News about hiring locals.  Click here to read. All of us need to have that same motto.  Support your locals.  Hire locals.  And on that same note, I need to ask AIA members for a favor.  The economy is really tough these days and we have so many sponsors who chose to spend their limited marketing dollars sponsoring AIA Birmingham. Look at our list of sponsors (below) and when you have a project - give them a chance.  Share the AIA love.

Thanx and remember to have some FUN every day!

Peace and AIA love,
Rhea Williams,
Executive Director

My daughter was part of dreamArchitecture. I wanted to thank you guys from the bottom of my heart for seeing the importance of art and inspiring children to do their best. How special you made them feel! The people and studio were amazing! Sincerely, Michelle Conn

Birmingham AIA Sponsors Go Above and Beyond

Every year, AIA sponsors invest their time and money in supporting AIA members. With their continued support, AIA Birmingham is able to hold Design Awards, golf tournament, the occasional free lunch, art openings, holiday party….the list goes on and on. With their support (and our members) we are able to continue and expand our community outreach programs.
THANK YOU AIA Sponsors and Members for helping make the Birmingham chapter a HUGE success!

dreamArchitecture, May Chapter Meeting- Where Were You?
I wish I could get you guys to attend this event one time.  You would be hooked and volunteer to be on the dreamArchitecture committee.  It was our largest attendance in 13 years.  The theme this year was Draw Your Green “Dream School”. There were 46 future architects who won awards for their creative design/artwork of their dreamSchool.
The awards ceremony was held at Saw Works Studio/ArchitectureWorks.  The winner’s enjoyed their moment in the spotlight as Dick Pigford, AIA read each students description of their design and pointed out green features on the project. The following Saturday 10 3rd, 4th and 5th grade winners participated in a hand’s on workshop with Dick Pigford, AIA, Adrienne Retief, AIA and Emily Johnson, AIA. The children love the one on one with an architect in an architect’s office.
This program has grown and is receiving recognition in the educational system as an “inspiring educational program” that is much needed in the arts. We are concerned about the lack of funding for arts in the school systems. We are open to ideas, suggestions, volunteers on how AIA can assist schools that do not have an art curriculum.

ALBERT KAHN EXHIBIT

We are happy to announce an exhibit at LITE BOX Gallery in Pepper Place of ALbet Kahn’s work July 20 – 26th.  The July Chapter Meeting at the Summit Club will kick off the opening of the exhibit and then there will be a reception at LITE BOX Gallery later in the week.  This is an event we hope will raise public awareness of architects.
Albert Kahn faced innumerable obstacles in pursuit of his ambition to be an architect.  His family could only afford to provide him a formal education until the age of 11 and he needed to work to help support the large family. He was fortunate to find two mentors --Julius Melcher, a sculptor and artist, who taught him drawing skills and George Mason, an architect in Detroit, who taught him design and gave him the opportunity to quench thirst for knowledge in the office library.
