AIA Birmingham: Newsletter masthead

12 week old owls in my front yard.
Nothing to do with architecture, but aren’t they cool!

Hello AIA Members!

Hello AIA Members!
We were handed a NEW idea for Design Awards and decided to take it and run with it!

AIA Birmingham Design Awards will be a part of the Green Building Focus Conference this year.  Tickets are FREE and we are inviting everyone to attend.  Design Awards will be held in one of the break out session pavilions. Expo floor is free to everyone. I know this is different and you are thinking I don’t know about this, but we have to take advantage of marketing opportunities when we see them. There will also be an Ask an Architect presentation on the demo stage prior to Design Awards.  Two AIA events on the same day, FREE to all.

Architects are always talking about educating the public and this is your chance.  We have the opportunity to reach people we would never be able to reach on our own. More info in the newsletter…

Peace and doing things differently,

Rhea Williams
AIA Birmingham Executive Director

Design Awards FREE!!??? HOW?
Sponsored by Crow Friedman Group
AIA Birmingham understands the financial situation of anyone who is in the architectural profession.  We had already changed the format for Design Awards to $50 a ticket/cocktail celebration.  Then we had the idea of having design awards with the Green Building Focus Conference and the event would be FREE to everyone.

Benefits of holding 2010 AIA Birmingham Design Awards Celebration with GBFC:
*Invite your family, friends, office, consultants, and potential clients; invite everyone to see your
  best projects!
*Design Award Boards exhibited at the Green Building Focus Conference
*Design Awards Celebration FREE to everyone
*Reach a larger broader audience
*More marketing opportunities – Media Splash!
* Educate more people about the need to hire an architect
*Ask an Architect - Educational outreach presentation prior to Design Awards

  • June 16th – Deadline for design award boards. We would like to create an excitement around Design Awards and the announcement of the winners.  I would love to see the boards on exhibit at Regions Harbert Center and other spaces.  If you have a suggestion or connection to have the boards exhibited, please let us know.  Remember the boards have to survive until Aug. 24th for the GBFC exhibit and design awards.

Design Awards will take place in a pavilion on the EXPO floor.  We will have our usual presentation of all entries and then announce the winners of each category.  There will be seating for the presentation of awards.  We are still working through some of the details like where is the bar and is it a cash bar?  Appetizers?
More details next month!

Money Saving Tips from AIA
FYI in hard times….

  • Credit card interest rates – Call your credit card company and let them know of your hardship.  Ask if there are payment options that include a lower interest rate.
  • Life insurance – Time to take an insurance evaluation. You may not need the same amount of coverage as you did when you took out the policy.
  • Car/home Insurance – Same goes for car/home insurance, check your deductibles…
  • Satellite or cable service – Call your cable provider, see if they have new “packages” available for a lesser price, if not, consider changing companies (let your current cable provider know, they usually will make you a better offer).
  • Phone Service (landline or cell) – Phone packages change on a regular basis, make sure you have the most recent “phone package” with current pricing.
  • Memberships (Y, Gyms, Clubs…) – Most have reduced rates for financial hardships.
  • Student loans – Federal Student Aid offers student loan deferment for economic hardship for up to three years. Click here to view deferment application.
  • Clip coupons online – You no longer have to wait for coupons to come in the mail. There are several websites offering hundreds of coupons for everything from food to hygiene products to diapers. They may not seem like much at the register, but they do add up and save you money. www.coupons.com is just one among many coupon sites.
  • Free computer/internet access – Utilize your public libraries. The Birmingham Public Library offers public computers and free Wi-Fi. Visit www.bplonline.org for more information and locations.
  • Angel Food Ministries (AFM) – A non-profit, non-denominational organization that provides food relief to communities throughout the U.S.  AFM provides food boxes with a week’s worth of meals for $30. None of the food is second rate or damaged. Different menus are offered each month. There are no applications or qualifications to be eligible for this program. There are 32 local host sites in the Birmingham and surrounding areas for this program. Visit www.angelfoodministries.com for more information.
  • Home energy checkup – Alabama Power offers an online free home energy checkup. By filling out a questionnaire about your home, Alabama Powers creates a personal energy profile for you, giving you a breakdown of your energy bills and energy saving tips specific to your home profile. Visit www.alabamapower.com/residential/checkup for more information.

I want to be an ARCHITECT when I GROW UP!

“I would like to thank AIA for sponsoring the dreamArchitecture contest. My son couldn’t be happier with his recognition and we are so proud of him. I believe it inspires and creates awareness among the young children about their environment. When my son came home after the award, he was so excited with his prize that he started doodling at home. He doesn’t spend as much time watching TV now. Best of luck to you and more power to your program!”
The above comment is from a parent whose son won an award at the dreamArchitecture awards ceremony.  We received several other emails and letters from parents expressing their gratitude for the dreamArchitecuture program.  Over 100 parents, teachers, students, ARCHITECTS and principals attended the awards ceremony held at SawWorks Studio May 6th.
Each year the awards ceremony exceeds our expectations. This is truly a night for the students to shine and show off their architectural talent.  Many parents attending have no idea what to expect and are so impressed with the ceremony. Many are surprised at their children’s hidden gift.  The winning students were awarded with art boxes, sketch pads, water colors, blik blocks and other art/architectural supplies to encourage their creativity and sketching at an early age.  The students love being the center of attention for the evening.  If only we all could still view the world through the eyes of a child and feel their excitement.

We had over 800 entries and 16 schools participated.  Several schools contacted the AIA office to have an architect give a presentation to their students.  This is a community outreach program with measureable SUCCESSFUL results!  We would like to thank Alabama Power Foundation and Sponsored by Victor O. Schinnerer & Company, Inc., the CNA Insurance Companies, and The AIA Trust, providers of the AIA Commended Program of Professional Liability Insurance support.

N2ARCHITECTURE! – A GREAT Success
N2ARCHITECTURE! is a program designed for 6th through 8th grade students that brings local practicing architects to area schools to present a 30 minute PowerPoint presentation aimed at educating students about the importance of architecture and what a career in architecture entails. The program encourages middle school children to consider a future career in architecture and realize it is attainable. A letter describing the program was sent in February to Birmingham city schools, Bessemer city schools, Fairfield city schools, Jefferson County schools, and Walker County schools – 77 schools total. Since the end of February, the AIA N2ARCHITECTURE! program has presented at four schools in the area.

$4,500 Awarded in Scholarships!
Thanks to a 2009 successful AIA golf tournament, the Birmingham Architectural Foundation was able to award three $1500 scholarships to Antonio Minifield (Tuskegee), Otto Clark (Auburn University) and Whitney Johnson (Auburn University).  This is the foundation’s 4th year to award scholarships totaling $15,500 since 2006.  A portion of this money was provided by matching scholarship grants from National AIA.  The recipients will be awarded and recognized at the July chapter meeting July 20th at the Summit Club.  Please make an effort to attend and show your support.
AIA members, you should be so proud of what you are doing to further the architectural profession.
