Hi AIA Members,
Members always ask, “What has AIA done for me?” Disaster struck on April 27th and we needed architects who were ATC 45 trained. Alabama only had a handful of ATC45 trained members. National AIA provided two ATC45 workshops and some manuals ($45).
May 7th – Tuscaloosa ATC45 – 166 people trained – 98 architects – Stan Peterson, AIA
May 24th – Birmingham ATC45 – 41 people trained – 37 architects – Michael Lingerfelt, AIA
1273 – 5/09 to 5/14 - Tuscaloosa Volunteer Hours for Building Safety Assessments -

The city of Birmingham has requested help from National AIA for the long term recovery of several areas. National AIA will provide a RUDAT/SDAT for the city.
Several other areas have asked for our assistance with their long term recovery plans. We are tentatively on hold until we know what long term recovery plans FEMA is committing to. We will offer our assistance to FEMA. If you would like to be involved with the long term planning, please email me. This is a long term commitment.

Thank you Loay Ali of European Kitchens of AL for a great May meeting. Frank Stitt gave a great presentation about kitchens and how to design them for cooking. NEW for 2011! In an effort to help you prepare for your tests, Emily Coe, AIA Emerging Professionals Director, has developed a study session plan for the remainder of the year. If you are having trouble deciding what order to take your tests, this guide will help. The goal would be to have an intro study session to each section of the ARE to jump start individual studying. Time is then allowed for individual or group study and/or test taking – before the next subject/division starts. These would then be followed with round table discussions to reflect on each past division taken. The Vignette Review will cover each vignette portion of each division including Schematic Design. For those interested in group studying, the AIA will continue to host weekly meeting on Tuesdays at the Vestavia Hills Library at 6pm. Interns, mentors and firm intern coordinators are encouraged to attend and participate. Happy Studying! Please also see the ARE Study Plan for 2012 by Clicking Here - this schedule covers all 7 divisions of the ARE 4.0 in 1 year’s time.

Governmental Affairs
AIA Working Hard to PROTECT THE ARCHITECTURAL PROFESSION
Legislature Passes Extension of Good Sam Coverage
HB 510, by Rep. Terri Collins (R) of Decatur, provides protection to persons who render assistance at the scene of an accident or emergency situation are granted civil immunity for their actions, provided those actions were done in good faith and without compensation. Under current law, the section of the Act that relates to architects and engineers is only good for 30 days from the Declaration of the Emergency. This bill would extend that protection for 90 days. The bill is now headed to Governor Bentley for his signature into law.
Statute of Repose Awaiting Governor's Signature
SB 59, by Senator Cam Ward (R) of Alabaster, reduces Alabama's Statute of Repose for architects, engineers and contractors from 13 years to 7 years. The statute of limitations will remain at 2 years. This reduction has been a long time in the making, but relief will be here shortly. We want to thank our sponsors, Sen. Cam Ward and Rep. Greg Canfield for all of their hard work and leadership in guiding this bill through the process. We also want to thank the Alabama Council's Legislative Committee and those members who contacted their legislators to get support for the bill.
Please take a few moments to drop to contact Senator Ward and Representative Canfield to express your appreciation:
Senator Ward: 334.242.7873 or Email camjulward@aol.com
Representative Canfield: 334.242.7763 or Email gcanfield@bellsouth.net
