AIA Birmingham: Newsletter masthead

Take time to relax!

Hello AIA Members!

I know you guys do not like to read long articles (sometimes even short ones), so here is your short editorial.
This economic crisis is only temporary.
Stay strong, don’t stress too much and it will be over this year.

Peace and AIA LOVE,
Rhea Williams,
Executive Director

AIA Birmingham wants to remind members projects are allowed and encouraged to be submitted up to five years after completion (since Jan. 1, 2004). This year’s jury in Miami Beach will provide yet another unique group to judge and award our best projects. So, submit your new projects, but don’t forget about older work. Here is a great opportunity to critique those prior submittals and make improvements.

Or perhaps there is a project you were too busy to submit in the past. Regardless, don’t forget to look deeper into your portfolio. You never know what will happen in Miami. (download the full

ITT Campus-Bessemer
We have an immediate opening for an individual to teach a course in sustainable design. Individuals interested in teaching need to prepare a "teach out" for Tuesday at 3:00 or Thursday at 4:30 at the ITT campus in Bessemer. A "Teach out" is a 15 minute demonstration of how you would teach a class in the subject matter. We are looking for energy and excitement in the classroom. The course starts March 19th and meets for 11 weeks from 6:00 until 10:20 on Friday evenings.

From the school catalog, CD245 Sustainable Design - This course examines a variety of issues surrounding the subject of sustainability. Students will explore the history of sustainability and current trends as they apply to design. Topics include materials, manufacturing techniques, new technologies, renewable resources, and product life cycle analysis.
Bachelor’s degree required. Contact PGoldman@itt-tech.edu for more information.

Rain Gear Meeting
Join us for another fun chapter meeting.  Amanda Kramer with Interiorscapes will present Green Roof Tops.  Learn about the public and private benefits and biophilia: the instinctive bond between humans and other living systems.

Mark Fockele with Fockele Garden Company will address the reasons for installing rainwater collection systems, including reduced reliance on municipal supplies, reduction of storm water runoff, and enhanced infiltration and aquifer recharge.  Finally and perhaps most importantly, the presentation will address important changes in landscape practices that will allow a landscape to flourish on the limited water volume that a rainwater system will supply.

81 Reasons Why There Has Never Been a Better Time to be an Architect???
Randy Deutsch, AIA, LEED-AP, an unemployed architect in Chicago, has managed to find optimism in this gloomy economy. In his new blog post, Randy lists 81 reasons there has never been a better time to be an architect. He offers an interesting, refreshing perspective on his situation. It might be something worth trying yourself. Here are a couple of my favorites…
28. Architects have an opportunity today – unlike that of any other time – to define and redefine their role and identity – their place within the profession – who you are and who you want to be and how you want to best serve your profession, community and world.
32. It is a great time to be an architect, but admittedly, having a working spouse helps.
43. No better time than now to work collaboratively, cooperatively – especially with the tools we’ve been given.

2010 Design Awards = Free Advertising for You!
Show off your work.
Your project will be printed in a Special Edition of Birmingham Business Journal.
All design award boards will be on display at the Green EXPO in August.
In 2009, the winners had a special TV commercial opportunity.
It keeps your firm name in the news during a time when you do not have advertising dollars.
Just because you did not win in 2009 does not mean you will not win in 2010 – NEW JURY!
Residential category will be featured in Birmingham Home & Garden.
Commercial & Institution will be featured in Business Alabama.
You'll be featured in the Design Awards Special edition newsletter (click to see the 2009 edition) (which had over 700 page views the day it went out and has had over 1400 total)

Why you SHOULD NOT ENTER 2010 Birmingham Design Awards?
You want your firm to remain anonymous.
I cannot think of any more reasons.

AIA Working to Protect Your Profession

Advocacy ... leadership ... visioning!  This year's AIA Grassroots Conference was filled with opportunities to stretch ourselves and envision greater possibilities!  On February 3-5, Susan Barron, Dick Richard, Ty Cole, Bruce Herrington and Rhea Williams represented AIA Birmingham at this year's event in Washington, DC.  As in years past, Thursday was filled with visits to our Congressmen and Senators to introduce and discuss topics of interest to the design and construction segment of the economy.  Assisted by "Issue Briefs" and a leave-behind poster prepared by AIA National, our contingent provided a clear message to of "what can be" to Senator Jeff Sessions and to legislative assistants of Senator Richard Shelby and Congressmen Spencer Bachus and Artur Davis.

Build Alabama Day

On February 23rd, the Alabama Council AIA joined with two professional engineering associations and six construction associations to host "Build Alabama Day" in Montgomery.  The day began with a convocation in the Capitol Building where we heard from Governor Bob Riley, Senators Lowell Barron and Rodger Smitherman, Anne Elizabeth McGowin of the Alabama Department of Finance, and Mr. Don Vaughn of the Department of Transportation.  The afternoon continued visits to our representatives and senators, and was highlighted when the House of Representatives voted to approve a version of the Bill containing the (AIA-backed) revisions to the Architectural Registration Law!  (There are a few more steps the Bill must take on the path to complete approval, but the process is one step closer to fruition!)  The day concluded with a well-attended after-hours reception for our representatives and senators.  Rhea Williams, Kim McMurray, Patrick Davis, Jamie Aycock, and Emily Coe represented the Birmingham Chapter in the group of architects, engineers, and contractors.  We were also pleased to have Robert Kuck (of Assa Abloy) and James Smith (of Green Building Focus) attend the conference with us!
