AIA Birmingham: Newsletter masthead

Hello AIA Members!

Bottle Tree at Rhea's house

Do you feel it?  What do you mean “feel what”?  The energy AIA Birmingham has right now.  The AIA Birmingham love.  If you were involved in the golf tournament, attended the Fall Tradeshow/Sponsor Appreciation luncheon or any of our chapter meetings this year you should feel the energy you guys have now.  It has been building (no pun intended) for a while- you guys rock!
There is a need for architects.  There is an architect awareness in the public and private sector right now due to the green/sustainable movement.  Everyone is realizing the impact buildings have on the environment – who designs the environment?  Architects.
This is AIA Birmingham’s opportunity to keep the energy going and keep ARCHITECTS in the forefront of this sustainable movement. You can change the world.
Don’t let the economy slow us down. Please renew your membership in 2009.

AIA BIRMINGHAM ARCHITECTS MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
Peace,
Rhea Williams, Executive Director

The Smorgasbord by Danya Humaideh
The mission statement of the AIA reads as follows: “The American Institute of Architects is the voice of the architectural profession and the resource for its members in service to society.”  Please take a moment to really think about what this means to you and the architectural community.  The AIA was formed in 1857 on the basis of preserving the standing of the profession and protecting the rights of ALL architects, large and small firms.  Through its advocacy efforts, it provides architects with guidance and standards for best practice in the built environment.  By having the initials “AIA” after your name, you have a valuable asset backing the reputation and the quality of your work.  Do not think of it as you are supporting AIA by paying the organization, but AIA supporting you and your life’s work. The fee you pay for membership grants the organization the means to continue to protect the architecture profession as a whole.

Solid State Lighting – Benefits, issues, and applications and how they relate to health safety and welfare.
The Department of Energy says solid state lighting is the future of lighting.  Based on high powered light emitting diodes, solid state lighting has found niche applications in commercial markets.  Now they are being specified in general lighting applications.  This class will explore the benefits of using these systems for general lighting along with the issues that must be addressed including light quality, installation, codes, control systems, etc.  In addition, a hands-on session will demonstrate the components and installation of a system.

FOOD DROP if you have any of these items

If you have been watching the news, you have heard Homeless Shelters are struggling to meet the demand for food request. Each day Pathways serves almost 200 meals to homeless women and children in our community.  In recent months, the number of women coming to our daily soup kitchen has increased from 50 to almost 75.  The number of families needing food boxes to make it through the month also continues to rise.  At the same time we see this rise in need, the cost of food is going up.  Donations of food will help us meet this growing demand for help. Please bring REQUESTED items only.
RICE, SPAGHETTI, SPAGHETTI SAUCE, MACARONI & CHEESE, HAMBURGER HELPER, GRITS, OATMEAL, CRACKERS, PEANUT BUTTER, CEREAL, CANNED SOUPS, CANNED SPAGHETTIS, CANNED RAVIOLI AND CANNED MEATS –TUNA, SALMON, CHICKEN, etc…
Thanks so much for thinking of us.  This will really help.
Connie Hill, Ph.D., Executive Director, Pathways

Rhea's Mom Recycles! If My MOM Can – AIA MEMBERS Can!
After hearing me preach about recycling all these years, my mother who is
71 years old is now recycling.  She has to collect all the recycling, sort it and drive it to the closest recycling center to their house which is 30 miles, Alabama Environmental Center downtown. Now, it is my goal that I do not have to wait until all of you are 71 until you start recycling.

We are “Walking the Walk” not “Talking the Walk”.

AIA Tradeshow/Sponsor Appreciation Luncheon

WOW!  AIA members really appreciate our sponsors!  Thank you to ALL members who showed their appreciation and support at the Fall Tradeshow. What a great show of support!  There were 230 (give or take a few) people who attended.  It was a great local way to see new products, green products, tried and true reliable products and I saw many of you catching up with old college friends. Thank you sponsors for supporting AIA Birmingham! (see more photos)

AIA GOLF TOURNAMENT!

The AIA GOLF tournament proved how much all of you care about helping others (or you really like to play golf!).  We realize the economy is not in the best shape and your businesses are struggling, but you still stepped up, sponsored our tournament and played.  We had 234 players and around 20 volunteers.  Laura Smith with Marvin Windows collected over $1000 in mulligans the day of the tournament.  This money will be part of the money donated to Pathways and Birmingham Architectural Foundation. We appreciate your support and time.  We look forward to next year’s tournament.
Thank you GOLF COMMITTEE for another great tournament:   Cay Alby, Tim Ayers, Ty Cole, Janet Cox, Roman Gary, Angela & Gary Nash, and Rusty Thomas. (see the photos) (thanks to our sponsors)
