The U.S. Dept. of Energy estimates energy needs will increase 40% by year 2030. Congress will likely pass legislation within two years mandating 10-15% of all energy produced by 2020 be from renewable sources such as wind or solar power.

Birmingham Architectural Foundation Receives Money!!!!!
Do you remember when AIA members had the opportunity to join the Summit Club and the Birmingham Architectural Foundation would receive $150? Well, the results are in and The Summit Club is presenting the Birmingham Architectural Foundation with a check for $900 on October 16th at the Sponsorship appreciation luncheon. This money will go toward a 2008 scholarship. See you at the October Chapter meeting! All contributions to the foundation are tax deductible.
THANK YOU 2007 MEMBERS FOR A GREAT YEAR!

WE LOOK FORWARD TO ANOTHER FABULOUS YEAR IN 2008!
National AIA 15 for 12!
What are we talking about? We are talking 15 for 12 starting October 1!
AIA wants to offer new/reinstating member the opportunity to join/reinstate in October so they may take advantage of the last quarter proration (referred to as 15 for 12- starting October 1)
Here is how it works:
Join/reinstate on/after October 1 – the new/reinstating member receives the rest of 2007 free and pays for 2008 membership dues (and brand new members receive a free registration to the convention – wow, what a bonus!). The next renewal the individual receives is for 2009 dues. (Yeah!!)
Have a question? Maybe it is one of the below:
Q - A “member” lapsed their membership this year (2007) and would like to pay now. Would they qualify for the 15 for 12 proration?
NO! …the individual who let their membership lapse this year (2007) is responsible for paying 2007 dues owed.
If they chose to let their membership lapse in 2007, they may reinstate in January 2008 (and not a day before!) and will not be responsible for paying prior year balance dues. (AIA policy is not the same as NCARB…AIA does not charge for “back dues”)

Golf Tournament is HERE!
The 13th Annual AIA Birmingham Golf Tournament will be next week, October 11th, 2007 at Robert Trent Jones (Valley & Ridge). Tee time is noon and box lunch at 11:00.

We have reached our limit of players. This is a record for the AIA GOLF Tournament!
Thank you to everyone playing and sponsoring the golf tournament.

Energy Prices, Environmental Awareness Motivating Homeowners to Go Green
Home improvement activity still healthy, despite housing market woes
Washington, D.C., September 13, 2007 — A growing share of homeowners are concerned with utility costs, which has led to an increase in demand for energy efficient solutions, greater popularity of home offices, along with healthy business conditions in the home improvement sector. These findings are from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Home Design Trend Survey for the second quarter of 2007 that focused on systems, technologies, and functional rooms in the home.
“As the environment and utility prices become more scrutinized, homeowners are demanding more energy efficient products and sustainable designs,” said AIA Chief Economist, Kermit Baker, PhD, Hon. AIA. “Structural insulation panels, geothermal heating / cooling systems, tankless water heaters and green flooring products such as bamboo and cork are all in high consumer demand.”
A recent AIA poll revealed that 91% of registered voters said they would be willing to pay $5,000 more for a house that would use less energy and protect the Earth.
For the third straight year, home offices are the most popular special function room. Addressing specific design issues, Louis B. Smith, AIA, chair of the AIA Small Projects Practitioners committee said, “Homeowners are looking for more than just a desk in a bedroom. They are looking for additional acoustic privacy, better natural lighting and even separate entry for clients. An architect’s design can help create the proper relationship between the office and the home, as well as ensure a productive environment that allows for work to be accomplished comfortably and efficiently.”
