Featured Architect of the Month: Adrienne Retief of Davis Architects, Inc.
by: Danya Humaideh
The Background: Adrienne was born and raised in South Africa. She moved with her family to Birmingham after high school. She has a strong passion for art which drove her to Auburn to receive a degree in architecture, which she completed in 1984. She became registered in 1987. From 1988 to 1991, Adrienne spent time in the Peace Corps teaching math to children in the Central African Republic.
The Dig: What inspired you to become an architect?
“I’ve always had a passion for drawing. When I was child, I liked to play and build in the dirt. My cousin and I loved to get on our bikes and look at all the different buildings being built around town.”
As a female, have you run into any difficulties in the field?
“The year I graduated from Auburn, we had the largest ever graduating class; out of the 86 that graduated, only 6 were women. Some of the professors at the time did not believe that women should become architects.”
What are your thoughts on architecture in Birmingham?
“I think Birmingham is behind the times. It seems like people are used to (the) “traditional architecture” and are afraid of ‘contemporary architecture’. It is a bit distressing.”
What benefits do you see of AIA?
“It offers architects opportunities to spend time with other professionals. It can be refreshing to interact with each other and to see what others are doing.”
What do you like most about working with interns?
“I love their enthusiasm. Working with them gives me the opportunity to teach them, but at the same time they teach me as well.”
What would you say are the strengths and weaknesses of AIA?
“I see programs like dreamArchitecture and Studio being great outreach tools. I think the AIA in general can improve its public image, and as architects we have the opportunity to become a resource for teachers. I think it would be good to form a committee of architects would work with teachers to develop ways in which Architecture can be included in the K-12 curriculum.”
What are your thoughts on LEED certification being a part of being an AIA member?
“I think it would be good. I am currently working on becoming LEED certified. I think AIA members should play a more active role in promoting sustainability.”

Birmingham is Building Green
LEED Certification for Brasfield and Gorrie, LLC
Birmingham is proud to announce another LEED certified building! Our goal is that one day all buildings will be LEED. The new corporate headquarters building for Brasfield and Gorrie, LLC has received LEED certification from the US Green Building Council. The building provides daylighting and exterior views for each employee. Through the implementation of many design elements, the building saves approximately 30% on energy and water usage. The building also has an underground storm water collection system that pumps water to the landscape irrigation system. The building was designed by Thompson Architecture, Inc.
GreenPlan
by Imaging Technologies Services, Inc.
Q: What is the GreenPlan and how can Imaging Technologies help me become environmentally friendly?
A: ARC’s GreenPlan is our nation-wide program aimed at making our company, and our industry, as sustainable and environmentally forward-thinking as possible.
Q: What is the purpose of it?
A: Our intention is to lead and be the standard by which all other reprographic and printing companies in our industry are judged.
Q: How will it help the environment?
A: As a corporation we will reduce consumption of resource-intensive goods and strive to become effective stewards of the environment.
Q: How is it practical?
A: We will work with our vendors and suppliers to help make current reprographic practices more environmentally sound and sustainable.
Q: What about paper?
A: We will offer you high-quality recycled-content products, digital document management tools, and recycling services that will insure that your document management also includes thinking about what’s the right thing to do with your waste paper.
Digital document management reduces paper use.
Choosing digital documents and plans for your building projects promotes a greener environment. Only print what you need and store your plans digitally. Our document management software can help you make a big difference.
Using recycled paper is easy.
Sustainable choices don’t have to be overwhelming or difficult.
Small decisions you make add up – like choosing recycled paper for plans and specs.
Using recycled-content paper for your reprographics needs can help leave a cleaner planet behind for the next generation.

Discovery Channel Looking for Architects
Would you like to be a part of a new program for the Discovery Channel?
We are looking for people from a wide variety of career fields who would be interested in being a host on the new show, “Hidden Cities" and the members of the AIA could be perfect for what we need. We’re looking for anyone who is involved in the field of infrastructure; architects, civil engineers, contractors or urban planners, etc… We would also like to meet any professors, teachers or people who are simply passionate about these topics. We don't need an expert in every area, just someone who loves what they do. We want to meet all types of people--any age, race, ethnicity, or gender. “Hidden Cities” will explore the vast and often invisible machinery that allows modern metropolises to function like clockwork. From how water makes its way to your tap, to how commuter systems work, it will all be covered. If you might be interested in this cool new show, I would love to hear from you! My contact information is: Alissa Haight, CarltonCasting Producer, "Hidden Cities", Discovery Channel 323-284-5162 hiddencitiescasting@yahoo.com.
