Hello AIA Members!
We are working with leaders around the world to make something happen in Birmingham. This video demonstrates how one person connected people around the world with music. Think about the sustainable, green, environmental, quality of life, glocally or green movement (whatever you wish to call it) and how it connects each person. Please take the five minutes to view this video, even if you are viewing if for the second time. View it with the sustainable, green, environmental, quality of life, glocally or green movement in mind.
Let’s all stand/work together to ensure the green changes are made in our city, state and region.
Peace,
Rhea Williams,
Executive Director

AIA & IIDA ADA Workshop / Need Credits before Sept. 30th?
We have arranged for the experts in this area to present ADA requirements on September 22. Our very own Jim Terry with Evan Terry Architects will present with Irene Bowen. They presented at the National AIA convention. Irene Bowen, J.D., is President of ADA One, LLC, a firm that provides Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) consulting, speaking, and mediation services to public and private entities for titles II and III of the ADA and other disability rights laws. As of January 2009, Ms. Bowen also serves as Senior Policy Advisor for LCM Architects, a Chicago-based firm. LCM provides design services for public and private clients and also consults locally and nationally on compliance with the ADA, the Fair Housing Act, and other accessibility laws.
Before she founded ADA One, Ms. Bowen’s career as a disability rights attorney spanned thirty years. In August 2008 Ms. Bowen left the Department of Justice (DOJ), where she had been Deputy Chief of the Disability Rights Section, overseeing enforcement of the ADA. She was actively involved in the development of the ADA, the original ADA accessibility guidelines, and DOJ’s existing and proposed regulations. She established the Disability Unit in the Civil Rights Division, the Department’s program for certifying state and local accessibility laws and codes, the first ADA investigation procedures, and the use of mediation as a means of resolving litigation. AIA Birmingham realizes times are tough and money is tight. We have gone back in time to the year 2000 golf pricing. AIA feels your financial pain and has decided to take action. We understand companies are trimming expenses, but we still need to help our two non- profit organizations, Birmingham Architectural Foundation and Pathways.
Our charity organizations are feeling the economic crisis and we have to continue our support.

Birmingham Manifesto – What is it?
The Birmingham Manifesto held its first meeting in the AIA office on Aug. 31st, 2009. There were twenty five people present who are ready to help identify areas we need to be greener/more environmentally aware. Trevor Matchett, AIA immediate Past President and Marshall Anderson, AIA are chairs of this committee and led the discussion. We are still in the process of determining the best course of action and if a manifesto is the right course to pursue. If you are interested in participating please email aiabirm@aiabham.org to receive the list of questions to help direct the next step.

August “Local” Chapter Meeting
What a great meeting we had at Birmingham Southern College. Nelson Brook with Blackwarrior River Keepers surprised us all with the statistics on companies that are NOT in compliance with ADEM and do not pay any fines nor do they change their way of discharging the pollutants. Edwin Marty educated us on what is going on in the urban gardens downtown and at Mt. Laurel. Roald Hazelhoff, our host, revealed the best trails within hours of downtown Birmingham. John Sorrell and John Cannfield closed with ways to prevent run off in the rivers and streams. We had such positive feedback from this meeting. Thanx to everyone!

Barkitecture
Barkitecture was a success again! Thank you AIA members for committing the time, creativity and giving back to the community for another successful fundraiser for the Greater Birmingham Humane Society. We do not have the official amount of money raised from this event, but will post in on the website as soon as we receive that information.
AIA Birmingham was responsible for the jury this year. Our jury was Auburn Professor Cheryl Morgan, Susan Lineberry Barron, AIA President Elect and local artist/dog rescuer Kevin Irwin. They crawled in the dog houses, tried lifting them to feel the weight and checked out every corner. The competition was so difficult this year, they decided on Honor and Merit awards in addition to the Best of Show dog house. See photos from the event here

The winners were:
Formworks - Best of Show and Honor Award
TRO/Jung Brannen – Honor Award
HKW – Merit Award
Risk Management Seminar – J.R. Prewitt & Assoc.

New Career Center Added to Alabama Council Web Site
In an effort to bring architects together in these tough financial times, the Alabama Council has added a feature to the web site for employers to post job openings and for architects seeking work to post their resumes and credentials. These items can be found at www.aiaalabama.org/career, or you can visit www.aiaalabama.org and click on the Career Resource Center in the top right hand of the page.
Take a few moments to review the new feature and encourage people to participate. It will only be useful if members utilize the site.
